B&B vs. Airbnb & VRBO: Clearing Up a Common Misunderstanding

B&B vs. Airbnb & VRBO: Clearing Up a Common Misunderstanding

One of the biggest misconceptions we run into in this industry is the difference between a traditional Bed & Breakfast and an Airbnb or VRBO. Airbnb’s marketing has been so effective that many travelers don’t realize these two experiences vastly different.

What Is a Bed & Breakfast?

A Bed & Breakfast (B&B) is a small, licensed inn that operates under state regulations. If food is served, the property must meet the same health and safety standards as any restaurant—inspections and all.

What truly sets B&Bs apart is their individuality.

  • Owners typically live on-site or nearby
  • Each property offers its own unique atmosphere
  • Breakfast can range from gourmet, chef-prepared meals to simple continental spreads.
  • Amenities and experiences vary widely based on the property and the guests it attracts

A B&B is, at its heart, a curated hospitality experience—personal, intentional, and defined by the character of the home and its hosts.

So, What About Airbnb or VRBO?

Airbnb & VRBO are online travel agencies— platforms that list short‑term rentals. While some B&Bs choose to advertise there, the majority of listings are private homes or rooms within a home.

Most of these properties:

  • Are not licensed as inns
  • Are not inspected under hospitality regulations
  • Generally, do not include breakfast
  • Operate independently of the standards required of traditional lodging businesses

Airbnb & VRBO are marketplaces. A B&B is an experience.

Why the Distinction Matters

Understanding the difference helps travelers choose the stay that best fits the experience they want. If you’re looking for a warm, hosted environment with thoughtful touches, local insight, and a delicious breakfast, a Bed & Breakfast is designed for exactly that.

If you’re simply looking for a place to sleep, Airbnb & VRBO offer a wide range of options—but without the structure, standards, or personal hospitality that define a true Bed & Breakfast.
